The critical skill of vendor management for new managers

You’ve been build software for a number of years now. Every project is a success, your team trusts you, you always deliver. Then one day you start having conversations with management about the future, whether informally or the dreaded where do you see yourself in five years question. You start receiving emails and phone calls around topics less about topics to build but more about how something would be built and what aspects to look in staffing to support it.

What is going on here? You, my friend, are being looked at for some level of management. It’s an entirely different realm, moving away from the building into managing how it will be built. Please be aware and build if you do not have skill in, understanding how to manage vendors. It can make or break your career as a manager.
